Imagine that someone is watching you.
Social media has transformed the way we share and consume private moments, blurring the boundaries between intimacy and public exposure. Platforms encourage users to reveal personal details and images to an unseen audience, fostering a culture of voyeurism where observation becomes both detached and normalized.
The work critiques this dynamic by making the act of voyeurism a physical, interactive experience. Shaped like a smartphone, an everyday symbol of social media, it features a camera lens through which the viewer must look to uncover an image. However, the brooch only comes to life when worn, as the observer must physically invade the personal space of the wearer to engage with the piece.
This intentional invasion mirrors the way social media allows for intimate access without physical presence, challenging the wearer and the observer to confront their roles in this exchange. By making the viewer’s actions deliberate and tactile, the brooch underscores the ethical discomfort of voyeurism and the erosion of boundaries in the age of digital connectivity.
